Family Childhood and Education
His father was a farmer. As a teenager, Cook did farming work alongside his father. At a teenage Cook did farming, until around the age of 18 he took an apprenticeship as a merchant seaman.
Cook decided to join the Royal Navy at the start of the Seven Years War. James became a master at map making. His ability at surveying, navigating, and creating large accurate maps was noticed by those high up in the Navy. He participated in the siege of Quebec City before the Battle of the Plains of Abraham in 1759.
